4th December every year, Rwanda joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Mining Day.

The mining sector is among the priority areas contributing to poverty alleviation, economic growth and rural unemployment reduction. These efforts are made towards achieving the goal of Rwanda becoming a middle-income country by the year 2020.

Over the last decade, Rwanda has experienced remarkable growth in the mining sector, with export earnings growing to US$373 million in 2017, up from US$40 million in 2006. Mining has now become the largest export earner and the second largest foreign exchange earner in the country.
