At Mining in Motion, RMB CEO Calls for Greater African Collaboration to Advance Sustainable Mining and Mineral Value Creation
Accra, Ghana, 19 October 2026 – Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) CEO Alice Uwase has called for stronger collaboration among African countries to build a more sustainable mining sector and ensure that a greater share of the value generated from the continent’s mineral resources remains in Africa.
CEO Uwase made the remarks during a Ministerial Roundtable at the Mining in Motion Conference, taking place in Accra, Ghana, from 19–21 October 2026.
The conference, hosted by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Ashanti Kingdom, through the Ashanti Green Initiative, brings together leaders and stakeholders from across Africa’s mining ecosystem to advance dialogue on the continent’s minerals policy.
The conference was opened by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana.
Speaking during the Ministerial Roundtable, CEO Uwase underscored the importance of African countries working more closely together, particularly through the exchange of good practices and approaches that contribute to a sustainable and competitive mining sector.
At the centre of her message was the need to ensure that Africa’s mineral wealth creates greater value for the continent.
She emphasised that enhanced collaboration can help countries learn from one another and strengthen sustainable mining approaches while pursuing a common ambition: ensuring that a larger share of the value generated from Africa’s mineral resources remains on the continent and benefits Africa.
This requires looking beyond the extraction of mineral resources and strengthening the conversation around how African countries can collectively maximise the value and long-term benefits derived from their mineral endowments.
With African countries possessing significant mineral resources, the discussions in Accra provide an opportunity for leaders and stakeholders to exchange perspectives on how minerals policy can support sustainable development across the continent.
For Rwanda, collaboration and the exchange of good practices remain important to advancing a mining sector that is sustainable, responsible and capable of creating greater value.
CEO Uwase’s participation in the Ministerial Roundtable reinforced the importance of African countries engaging with one another on shared priorities and identifying opportunities to strengthen cooperation across the continent’s mining ecosystem.
The Mining in Motion Conference continues through Wednesday, 21 October 2026, with discussions focused on Africa’s minerals policy and the future of the continent’s mining sector.
