President Kagame visits Nyakabingo mine – Africa’s largest tungsten producer
Rulindo District, Rwanda – May 23, 2025 – President Paul Kagame today visited Trinity Metals' Nyakabingo Mine in Rulindo district, a site of significant economic and strategic importance as Africa's largest tungsten producer. The mine is Africa’s largest tungsten producer and makes Rwanda rank 4th globally after China.
During his visit, President Kagame toured the facilities of Nyakabingo. Over the past three years, the mine has more than tripled its monthly tungsten production, now reaching an impressive 120 tonnes. This surge in output is attributed to substantial investments in industrial mining infrastructure, focusing on upskilling its workforce, adoption of cutting-edge mining technologies, and a stringent adherence to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations across mine operations.
Nyakabingo Mine is a significant employer, providing livelihoods for 1,800 workers. Beyond its core mining activities, the company is recognized for its progressive approach to human resources, actively blending gender mainstreaming initiatives with the creation of off-farm job opportunities for communities surrounding the mine.
A key success story at Nyakabingo is its commitment to responsible mining practices, which includes a successful program for integrating illegal miners into formal, legal operations. This initiative enhances both safety and regulatory compliance as well as providing sustainable employment pathways for individuals previously engaged in informal mining.
President Kagame's visit underscores the government's continued support for the responsible development of Rwanda's mining sector and its commitment to fostering sector’s sustainable economic growth through strategic investments and innovative practices.
