RDB CEO Jean Guy Afrika and RMB CEO Alice Uwase jointly visited GAMICO and LuNa Smelter

Kigali, July 22, 2025 – Rwanda Development Board (RDB) CEO Jean Guy Afrika and Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) CEO Alice Uwase conducted a joint visit to GAMICO’s Bashyamba Mine and LuNa Smelter. The visit underscored Rwanda’s commitment to boosting cassiterite production while strengthening the country’s tin smelting capacity.

GAMICO Ltd, based in Nyarugenge District, Kigali Sector, operates one of Rwanda’s largest tin mines. Positioned at the extraction end of the mineral value chain, GAMICO has become a model of professionalism and adherence to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. The company has made significant investments in technology-driven operations, as well as modern on-site mineral processing and beneficiation facilities.

At the other end of the value chain is LuNa Smelter, an ultra-modern tin processing plant located in Karuruma on the outskirts of Kigali. As a leading African supplier of conflict-free, high-quality tin, LuNa is recognized for its strong sustainability, traceability, and compliance practices, benchmarked against the world’s best standards. Notably, it is the first tin smelter in the Great Lakes Region to achieve full compliance with the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP). This certification validates LuNa’s management systems and sourcing practices in alignment with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance, the EU Regulation 2017/821, and the U.S. Dodd-Frank Act.

Further setting itself apart, LuNa has developed a proprietary Chain of Custody (CoC) system powered by blockchain technology—a cutting-edge solution that is revolutionizing transparency and accountability in the global mining sector.

Together, GAMICO as an upstream producer and LuNa Smelter as a downstream value addition player illustrate Rwanda’s drive to modernize and formalize its mining sector anchored on innovation, sustainability, and professionalism.
