RWANDA MINING WEEK TO BE HELD FOR ITS SEVENTH EDITION

The seventh edition of Rwanda Mining Week comes this December from 04 to 06 bringing together mining industry leaders, public officials, civil society organizations, academia and community members.

Annually held in December and co-organized by the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB|), Rwanda Mining Association and the School of Mining and Geology, College of Science and Technology, University of Rwanda, Rwanda Mining Week is a premier platform for key stakeholders and leaders in the local and regional extractive industries

The theme for this year is " Mining for Community Development." This aims at reflecting and strategizing on how best mining operations and benefits must be placed at the heart of communities’ wealth and health while mitigating environmental footprints.

The three-day mining event will include a one-day conference with insightful panel discussions and speakers; a three-day exhibition to showcase Rwanda's mineral potential, featuring a virtual reality underground mine experience and various presentations. Attendees will also visit Nyakabingo mine in Rulindo district, and the geoscience laboratory in Kicukiro district. The event will conclude with a graduation ceremony for 500 miners who completed the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program.

Objectives

The objectives of Rwanda Mining Week 2024 are as follows:

i. To showcase the Rwandan mineral endowments and the entire mineral value chain

ii. To discuss best practices to enhance sustainability and mining impact on communities.

iii. To create space for networking, partnerships, and collaborations necessary to drive Rwanda’s mining sector growth.

Activities during Rwanda Mining Week

Day 1. Wednesday 4th December 2024

  • Conference + Exhibition opening
  • Presentations and Panel discussions
  • VIP visit to the geoscience laboratory

Day 2. Thursday 5th December 2024

  • Exhibition
  • Presentation + Mine visit to Nyakabingo Mine in Rulindo district to showcase illegal miners’ integration and other community works. Nyakabingo is Africa’s largest tungsten producer and stands as the continent’s shining example for illegal miners handling.

Day 3. Friday 6th December 2024

  • Visit to the tantalum refinery in Bugesera district
  • UR CST Mining and Geology School program
  • Exhibition closure
  • Graduation ceremony for 500 miners
